Genuinely the best reason for any law firm to apply for and retain Lexcel, is to help the managers of the business to have an external "bad cop" to help bring those unruly lawyers (cats?) into line.

But genuinely the even better reason for those managers to apply for and retain Lexcel is that it forces you to hold yourself to account (no-one else is going to) for reluctantly, begrudgingly, kicking and screamingly - actually doing some of the strategic level tasks/reviews that you should do, and which (in hindsight) really are properly useful - that would probably never happen otherwise - because there is always something more urgent to do.

As managers, we need to 'fess up to the fact that, without external scrutiny, unless we are held to account, we often get distracted from doing the important (as opposed) to urgent stuff.   What you are to your staff as a manager; in terms of holding them to account - Lexcel is to you.

From a standing start, there is a lot of work to get your Lexcel accreditation into place.   However, lots of practices will already have the skeletons of some plans and procedures which can be used as the basis of accreditation - and there are other useful resources and templates out there.   Still, most people would still benefit from being able to use someone who has been around the Lexcel block as a sounding board and, also, from someone to help with the preparation of the documentation you will need in place - or at least to cast an eye over it before you apply for accreditation.
